Educators line up in order of their global school temperature

Global Concerns Classroom partnered with Mercy Corps’ Action Center to End World Hunger on October 26, 2009 to host a Global Learning Open House for Educators.

About 35 educators from the New York City area including some from Connecticut and New Jersey came to the Action Center at Battery Park City to dialogue and share their experiences engaging youth in global education.

The event started with an interactive activity where teachers answered a series of questions in order to calculate their school’s “global temperature”. As an icebreaker, teachers lined up in order from the lowest to the highest temperature school. Specific global temperatures were shared in order to capture the range in which schools evaluate and view their own global learning community.

Educators then shared the needs, challenges, and successes in which schools can experience a globally engaged environment. As one teacher expressed, “There are a number of people who have been at the school long enough and who are interested in global issues that most of the students are introduced to it several times in their experiences. But we haven’t had a school-wide initiative where everyone is engaged in a global activity all at the same time.”

Following the icebreaker activity, Global Concerns Classroom and the Action Center to End World Hunger presented on their respective global education programs and shared resources and ideas on how to raise a school’s temperature.

GCC offers classroom guides on global issues, student-narrated videos, and educational posters to schools free of charge and provides curricula support for classes, after-school clubs, and grade or school-wide assemblies and workshops.

The Action Center hosts site visits for schools to engage in interactive workshops surrounding global hunger and poverty and offers service learning opportunities in the form of messaging, fundraising, and advocacy.
